Sucker Punch Productions has officially announced that their highly anticipated follow-up to the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima will be released on October 2, 2025, exclusively for PlayStation 5. Ghost of Yōtei takes players to the northern Japanese island of Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido) in the 1600s, where they'll embark on a journey of revenge, redemption, and discovery.
A New Protagonist's Journey
Unlike Ghost of Tsushima, which followed samurai Jin Sakai during the Mongol invasion of Japan, Ghost of Yōtei introduces a new protagonist named Atsu. Sixteen years before the game begins, a gang of outlaws known as the Yōtei Six murdered Atsu's family and left her for dead, pinned to a burning ginkgo tree outside her home.
Having survived and trained for years, Atsu returns to Ezo with a list of six names: The Snake, The Oni, The Kitsune, The Spider, The Dragon, and Lord Saito. Armed with the same katana used to pin her to the tree, she hunts them down one by one to avenge her family.
Key Features
- Open-world exploration across the rugged landscapes of Ezo (Hokkaido)
- Player-driven story where you choose which Yōtei Six member to hunt first
- Enhanced combat system with new weapons and techniques
- Ability to track bounties and learn from weapon sensei
- Build campfires anywhere in the open world for rest
- PS5-exclusive features utilizing DualSense controller haptics and adaptive triggers
More Than Just Revenge
While Atsu's story begins with vengeance, developers have hinted that her journey will evolve into something more profound. As she explores Ezo, she'll meet unlikely allies and forge connections that give her a new sense of purpose beyond revenge.
"We've built upon and evolved the way you explore the open world, offering even more freedom and variety than in Ghost of Tsushima," said Andrew Goldfarb, Senior Communications Manager at Sucker Punch Productions. "Ezo is wild, and as deadly as it is beautiful."
"While the stories are unrelated, it's important to us to make this a worthy follow-up to Jin's journey, and we can't wait for you to experience Atsu's quest for vengeance later this year."

Building on Success
Ghost of Tsushima was one of the most successful new IPs for PlayStation in recent years, selling over 9.73 million copies as of July 2024 and receiving critical acclaim for its stunning visuals, immersive world, and engaging combat. The game was later enhanced for PS5 and received an expansion titled Iki Island.
While Ghost of Yōtei features a new protagonist and setting, it appears to build on many of the elements that made its predecessor successful, while introducing new mechanics and a more player-driven narrative structure.
